A top class field of 17 racers arrived at Rockingham on a sunny Sunday 15th June for the 3rd round of Falcon Pro Championship 2014.

The field included Steve Taylor, Gavin Wills, Stan Alton, Chris Thomas (fresh from the IRSA warm ups in Latvia) as well as Nick Clements, Sandy and Ralph Parker to name but a few.

Race control for the day was run by Mike Kerr with help from other members of the club. The format was the usual standard for Falcon pro, starting with 1/32 Sports qualifying, then the 1/32 Sports race, followed by 1/32 Formula One and 1/24th Sports. To help the racing run smoothly, start positions for F1 and 1/24 sports were taken from the previous race result.

Qualifying.

32 Sport Qualifying saw Chris Thomas set the pole position target just 1/100th/lap ahead of seasoned Rockingham racer Gavin Wills.  With Steve Taylor , Stan Alton and Nick Thrower completing the top five we were clearly going to be in for some close racing throughout the day.

32 Sport Race.

Gavin Wills took the 32 Sport laurels just a shade under a lap ahead of the hard charging Nick Thrower. Sandy Parker had a cracking run from the “C” final to take 7th overall 2 laps ahead of Nick Clements who is clearly a star of the future.

Formula 1.

Once again Gavin Wills took the top step of the podium after a ding dong battle with Steve Taylor, the gap between the two less than half a lap at the chequered flag. Once again young Nick Clements put in a smooth mature drive to finish 4th while Chris Thomas (who’s car only had three wheels at one point!) and Nick Thrower fought tooth and nail for 5th place throughout the 18 minute race. Oaklands own Brian Bradley had a creditable 8th in his F1 debut at Rockingham.

24 Sport

Steve Taylor scored the victory he had been threatening to take in 24 sports by 2 laps but all eyes were on the dogfight between Gavin Wills and Chris Thomas. The closing seconds of the race saw them trading places much like Villeneuve and Arnoux at Dijon in 79! Gavin wills took the 2nd place less than 1 segment ahead of Chris Thomas after a nail-biting race.

It was great to see some new racers to the series enjoying what was a very competitive days racing. Including Brian Bradley and Steve Rhodes from Oaklands Park.  Young Alice Howard put in a great performance and is shaping up to be a “fast lady” of the future under the close tutelage of Sandy Parker.

Many thanks go to Rockingham and the guys for running a great day and Mrs Clements for doing a bacon and egg butties at lunch time.
